The construction of this pure fire column was initiated in December 1898 by the chairman of the Bismarck Association of the Gelsenkirchen district, founded in 1896, the general director of Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG, Emil Kirdorf (1847-1938) from Ückendorf near Gelsenkirchen.

The construction commission formed on December 28, 1898 consisted of general director Emil Kirdorf, mine director Rud. Bürgel, publishing bookseller Carl Besterling, office manager Brenscheid, building contractor Wilh. Ecke, building contractor H. Timmermann and machine inspector Brauns.

The 16.75 m high fire column without a viewing function is an obelisk-like structure with a square floor plan and can be divided into five architectural elements.

On July 29, 1900, at 11:00 a.m., the ceremonial but simple inauguration of the "1st Pillar of Fire of the two sister provinces of Rhineland and Westphalia" took place. In addition to the district administrators from Essen and Gelsenkirchen, representatives of the authorities and the mining and iron works took part in the inauguration ceremony. The keynote speech was given by General Director Emil Kirdorf. Afterwards, a Bismarck celebration took place in the Brasselschen Saale.
