Even as a teenager, Jaume Plensa was fascinated by Neanderthals and their world, unaware that a place with that name existed.

In the clearing diagonally opposite the mutant now stands his aluminum question mark, titled SOUL. Plensa has realized an abstract symbol from our written communication system as a sculpture, thereby expanding the dimension of the overall project.

For Plensa, the question of the soul is the question of "ultimate things," of the essence of humanity. For him, it remains a question without expectation of an answer.

Jaume Plensa, born in Barcelona in 1955, focuses primarily on "the interplay of mind and matter, not mere form" in his multifaceted sculptural work. He poetically dissolves the corporeal and transforms the ephemeral into concrete forms. Thus, his works achieve a poetic condensation and intellectual penetration of space, transcending physical form. In addition to materials such as stainless steel, bronze, marble, and alabaster, Plensa frequently incorporates text, sound, and light into his work. Furthermore, for him, silence and the spoken word, thoughts, ideas, and dreams possess their own materiality and, as vibrant energy, become sculptural material. Indeed, Jaume Plensa's works always demand the viewer's imaginative participation—and their presence lingers long afterward.

Numerous prestigious awards attest to the high regard Jaume Plensa enjoys worldwide—in 2019 alone, he was appointed an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts in Moscow and received further honors in Barcelona and New York. Since graduating with a degree in art from Barcelona, he has exhibited his distinctive sculptures and installations internationally on numerous occasions and created more than 50 permanent outdoor projects in public spaces around the globe. These can be found in cities such as London and Madrid, Chicago, Montreal, New York, and Rio de Janeiro, as well as in Dubai, Jerusalem, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo.

In Germany, Plensa has participated repeatedly in the Blickachsen Sculpture Biennial, and his eight-meter-high letter sculpture "Body of Knowledge" is considered a landmark of the Westend campus of the University of Frankfurt am Main. His work has also been featured in major museum exhibitions in Germany—for example, at the Lehmbruck Museum, the Kunsthalle Mannheim, concurrently at the Gaskessel, the Schaezlerpalais, and the H2 – Center for Contemporary Art in Augsburg, and most recently at the Max Ernst Museum.

Over the past two decades, Jaume Plensa's solo exhibitions at Galerie Scheffel have offered insights into various phases of the artist's work – and in 2016 he participated in the opening exhibition of the gallery's second location, the Jakobshallen, next to Bad Homburg Castle. In 2019, Jaume Plensa presents his first solo exhibition at Galerie Scheffel's Jakobshallen.
