Take a little time to tour this imposing church. It was built at the end of the 17th century and the interior is lavishly decorated. It is also known as "The Golden Church".

The baroque basilica San Ġorġ (St. George) is located on the Pjazza San Ġorġ south of the market square in the capital Victoria of the Maltese island of Gozo. It was built between 1672 and 1678, but was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1693 and was therefore not consecrated until 1755. The facade was re-clad in 1818. The church is also known as the “golden church” because of its magnificent interior. Its interior walls and columns are completely covered with marble and it is richly decorated with paintings and statues.

Almost nothing reliable is known about the life of Saint George, to whom the church of Victoria (Gozo/Malta) is dedicated, but his veneration dates back to early Christianity. A martyr identified with George is said to have lived in the third century.
On the other hand, the legend of Saint George slaying the dragon is well known and widespread. He is usually depicted – in paintings or as a statue – as the conqueror of the monster, often as a knight on horseback.
The memorial day of the very popular George - he is, among other things, the patron saint of the English kingdom - in the calendar of saints is on April 23rd.
