    Reformed City Church, Winterthur
The Winterthur City Church is in the center of the old town and is one of the city's most famous sights. Its current form as a three-aisled basilica with a double tower dates back to the last major renovations in the 15th century. It is one of three churches in the canton of Zurich that has two towers. Unusual for a reformed church are the wall paintings by Paul Zehnder, completed in 1930.
The reformed Winterthur City Church (formerly St. Laurentius) is in the heart of the old town and is now one of the city's landmarks. It is an east-facing, three-aisled basilica with a large rectangular choir flanked by two towers. This is a special feature, because apart from Winterthur, only two other churches in the canton of Zurich have two towers: the Grossmünster in Zurich and the Rheinau monastery church. The main entrance is at the Garnmarkt. The west façade is impressive with its highly prominent gable and the tracery window that is around eight meters high. The two side aisles each have five tracery windows and somewhat simpler clerestory windows. The monumental choir has a high window with stone ornaments on each of the side walls and a three-part narrow window system from the 19th century on the east façade.

Two towers for Winterthur, Reformed City Church, Winterthur
The north tower is the oldest preserved part of the church. It was built towards the end of the 12th century from sandstone that came from a quarry near the Heiligberg. The original masonry reaches a height of 15 meters. A little below, reddish burn marks can be seen, which date back to a fire in the 14th century. The badly damaged tower was rebuilt at that time with darker tuff stones. This change in material is still clearly visible today. Until 1794, the north tower had a Gothic pointed roof. This was then adapted to the baroque dome of the south tower by the Zurich architect David Vogel (1744–1808). At the same time, the tower was raised.
The south tower was built between 1486 and 1490 and is significantly larger in its floor plan than its older neighbor. The south tower is made entirely of sandstone from the Heiligberg. The tower originally had a so-called Käsbissen - a kind of pent roof - and was also popularly known as "the stunzige" (= blunt). It was not until 1659 that the tower was given a baroque hood by stonemason Hans Conrad Frei, which was modeled on the town church of Zofingen. This meant that the tower reached a height of 64 metres at the top. The town clockmaker Tobias Liechti gave it a new clock with a time table and hands. Dragon-shaped gargoyles above the cornice drain the rainwater. Behind the thick walls was a well-protected floor above the sacristy, where the council archives were housed. All important documents, including the town charter and the town treasure, were kept there. In the sacristy there are wall paintings of the three Text / Source: Winterthur Libraries, Winterthur Collection, Obere Kirchgasse 6, Winterthur

The town church stands in the heart of the old town. The Romanesque-Gothic choir dates from the 13th century. The interior of the church was painted by Paul Zehnder from 1923-30. The most important piece of equipment in the church is the Walcker organ.

The town church is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Sundays.
