Several hospitals and homes in Berlin-Buch, which were built between 1898 and 1930 under the direction of the Berlin architect and city planning officer Ludwig Hoffmann, are grouped under sanatoriums in Berlin-Buch. The complex included two pulmonary sanatoriums, a retirement and nursing home and two psychiatric clinics. Hoffmann built various individual buildings: a control center for lighting, heating and water supply for the sanatorium, several residential buildings, administration buildings and a cemetery. The last project was the construction of a housing estate for the hospital staff. The site has been in the process of being converted into a residential area since 2012.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Berlin-Buch was home to Europe's largest hospital complex. It was home to one of the most important brain research institutes, which the Nazis used to examine euthanasia victims. Hitler was autopsied here and Honecker was treated here.
