The name is reminiscent of the Dominican monastery that was located here in the Middle Ages.
The old buildings were completely destroyed in the great city fire of 1844. The new buildings were built in the rectangular square that still exists today. Several of the late classical houses are still standing.

In 2003, the fountain was created, reminiscent of the former importance of the square.
