The Kleine Wümme is a left tributary of the Wümme in Bremen. The course of the river has been altered since the 12th century as a result of the agricultural development of the Hollerland. With the housing development of the Vahr in the 20th century, parts of the course finally went into the sewage system.

The Kleine Wümme is to be renaturalized. Following an application by the Bremen Nature Conservation Authority, 4.3 million euros have now been made available for the "Natural Kleine Wümme" project from the federal government's "Action Program for Natural Climate Protection". A further half a million euros will flow from Bremen state funds into the five-year project.

The "Natural Kleine Wümme" project aims to improve, renature and stabilize the inflow of the Wümme over the next five years. According to the authority, the aim is to improve the water quality, among other things, and to prevent the Kleine Wümme from drying out in droughts by means of new structures in the riverbed.
