Roßtal

"The most important place in both Principalities"

In 1709, the Ansbacher Hofrat Pachelbl Roßtal described as the "most important place in both principalities of Burggrafenthum Nuremberg". The long history of the town, which already has a castle of 5.2 hectares in the early Middle Ages, is always well known to the Hohenzollern Margrave of Ansbach.

Even today, outstanding buildings of the Middle Ages dominate the historic center: the center is formed by the unusually large St. Lawrence Church, where the coat of arms of the Hohenzollern can be found, as well as the surrounding cemetery. Together with the late medieval vicarage and the castle located on the market square, these buildings characterize the place.

In 1328 Roßtal received the market and city rights from the emperor, and in 1355 the city privilege was confirmed. Connected with this is a jail court, which executes its sentences in the name of the Hohenzollern.

Roßtal is still known as the town in 1532, although the town, situated high above the neighboring valleys, does not take urban forms despite the Hohenzollern's promotion. Roßtal, however, remain its function as the central court seat of the Hohenzollern and its location on the gallows height Richtstätte south of the place. Even the Baroque Amtsrichterhaus, which adjoins the Wehrfriedhof, is still today a visible expression of the high courts that Hohenzollern exercises until 1797.
