Near the village, in the high, protective dunes, lies a patchwork of dune fields where the "Derpers" (villagers) grow their vegetables. An ancient tradition that is still alive today. They dug out small plots in sheltered spots in the sand to create a flat piece of land ("lankie") and get closer to the groundwater. They often used marine waste, seaweed, and starfish as fertilizer. Gardening is still practiced in many of these small fields, these days more as a hobby than a means of subsistence. Today, we can see that the severe floods of last year are receding somewhat, and the first amateur gardeners are trying to make the land usable again.
