"... The Romans were extremely mobile. Otherwise it would not have been possible for them to build up and secure their huge empire. A pavilion in the APX offers a wealth of information about ancient trunk roads, couriers, road maps - and three roadworthy replicas of Roman carriages and wagon.

Three Roman chariots were reconstructed in the APX using the latest research. They are exhibited in the pavilion: The "cisium" was a light traveling carriage for two people and little luggage. It was fast, very manoeuvrable and yet robust, but without springs and, by today's standards, uncomfortable. Since it had no brakes, driving it was not without danger.

The carriage of the "carruca" type offered more comfort. Its upper part hung from strong leather straps to absorb shocks on rough ground. The variant shown in the pavilion had a leather canopy and was built for longer journeys.

The "carrus" was a real truck. Goods of all kinds could be transported on its long loading area and protected from moisture and dust with a tarpaulin. The carrus was often used in agriculture or to transport goods from the ports to the settlements in the hinterland. ..."
