Ever since prostitution was legalized in the Netherlands in 2000, Amsterdam's Red Light District has become a veritable tourist attraction.

And so, today, in the early evening hours, you can even see families with children strolling through the narrow streets past the red-lit shop windows where women offer their services. Sounds strange? Don't worry, later in the evening, the families disappear and the area is taken over by curious couples, party-loving tourists, bachelorette parties, and all sorts of truly strange characters.

The Red Light District is located slightly northwest of the station forecourt of Amsterdam Central Station, between Nieuwmarkt (New Market) and De Oude Kerk (Old Church).

The center is located on the Achterburgwal, where you'll find numerous shops where you won't find anything you can't find. Between the Achterburgwal and the Nieuwmarkt, the sometimes very narrow alleys wind, where women lounge behind glowing red windows, creating a red-light district that is probably unique in the world. On Saturday evenings from spring to autumn, thousands of tourists and locals push their way through the narrow streets – prostitution is an attraction in Amsterdam.
