De Duivelskuil in Mol is one of the most haunted places in the Kempen. Legend has it that the devil resides in this unique fen after being surprised by a thunderstorm. A well-aimed bolt of lightning knocked him off his team in flight. Since then, he has been lurking from the bottom of this murky swamp to lure careless visitors into the water with his hook.
The explanation for the legend may lie in spontaneously igniting methane gas that used to terrify passers-by.
The natural value of the Devil's Pit is exceptional. It is one of the few places where gale still grows, also known as the lavender of the Kempen.

Guaranteed wet feet and blackberry twigs and a chance of minor accidents for curious people like myself. A narrow path that splits further will bring you closer. But then you still see nothing more than the very beginning of a very large fen.
