In the Middle Ages, extensive alder breeches were here. Overgrazing with sheep also created moist heathland in some places. Loam was also mined and there were coppice forests. In 1326, the duke of Brabant gave the inhabitants of Liempde a gemeijnt (land for common use) of 68 acre that had previously been issued by the duke on loan to Jacobus Johannes Van Woluwe. This concerns The Scheeken. A gemeijnt such as was present in De Scheeken, was issued by the lord to rightful claimants, who could use it jointly. It was a regional territory, with its own strict organization and its own problems. The local communities made use of the communities and were economically dependent on them. The name Scheeken comes from a border tree a Schei oak. Community borders remained a recurring problem.
