It was a summer evening in 1967 when two young people were making a pilgrimage through Hanover's old town and wanted to take a break on the Hoher Ufer. Down there directly on the promenade, also affectionately called Little Paris by the Hanoverians, there was an old horse-drawn carriage that could be attached to a car and was loaded with lots of odds and ends, junk, old clothes and bottles filled with Seine water. The owners of this vehicle (male and female) probably had the idea of bringing the Paris flea market to Hanover. Was that one person called Reinhard Schamuhn, the later flea market founder mentioned in the history? In any case, soon thereafter there was a lively sales activity around the Leine area, which established itself as the Hanover flea market. The former chairman of the Lindener Berg jazz club and the Hanoverian image promoter Mike Gehrke was then appointed flea market director. Today the path between Leibniz-Ufer and the Leine is signposted as Mike-Gehrke-Promenade.

The Hohe Ufer in Hanover is a shore road that runs along the eastern side of the Leine.
It stretches from Goethestraße to the state parliament next to the Leine Castle.
