How can a building be one of the oldest in the city and still be very much alive? The castle of the Dukes of Brabant shows how this should be done. Its history goes back a long way, to the 13th century, when the monument was still the country residence of the Brabant dukes. Now the court is housed there.

Besieged moated castle
The castle proudly shows the scars of its rich history. During the Eighty Years' War it was hit by a hundred cannon shots, deterioration followed in the eighteenth century and two centuries later there was talk of demolition. Fortunately, the province bought the castle and had it restored by Jules Taeymans. It has been a listed monument since 1936.

The castle dates back to the 12th century and has been rebuilt several times. In the time of Mary of Hungary, governor of the Netherlands, it was a court of pleasure. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle fell into disrepair. The province bought the building from the municipality around the beginning of the 20th century and after the First World War under the supervision of provincial architect Jules Taeymans proceeded to a thorough restoration. Today, the court is housed there.
