A 90% life-size statue of Hercules wrestling Anteus, carved in stone. The statue stands on a plinth measuring 97cm square and 1.23m tall. The base and top of the plinth are sandstone, the rest limestone.The plinth is sited in the focal point of the amphitheatre element of the earthworks (30172) beside the Upper Canal.

Documentary Sources: The only appearance of this statue in the estate papers is in a report of moving the yew hedge to the west from the back to the front of the enclosing amphitheatre in 1771.

There is some evidence to suggest that a statue of Pan may have stood on or near this site and there are suppositions for an entirely different use of the amphitheatre in the early garden design. The statue had arrived here, however, by 1741 (Text 15). It is depicted by Nebot (n.d.(b) Ill.53) and Walker (1758d Ill.29). A later sketche by Dunning (n.d. Ill.259) shows it much as it appears today.
