Deutsche Welle (DW) is the international broadcaster of the Federal Republic of Germany. DW was founded in 1953; it is an institution under public law and a member of the ARD, but is not financed by broadcasting contributions, but by federal tax money; The Federal Commissioner for the Media of the Federal Government is responsible. The German locations are in Bonn and Berlin, with Bonn acting as the headquarters. Programs are offered in 32 languages. Traditionally, the playout took place exclusively via short and medium wave. Since the 1990s, in addition to shortwave with its large terrestrial range, the station has used satellite transmission, an Internet live stream and, in some countries, the VHF band locally. Deutsche Welle works trimedially: television (DW-TV), radio and internet (dw.com and social media).

The Schürmann Building is an office building in the Gronau district of Bonn that was completed in 2002. It is named after its architect Joachim Schürmann. The building now houses the headquarters of Deutsche Welle, after it was originally planned as a parliamentary office building and was severely damaged by a Rhine flood in 1993. With an estimated construction cost of 700 million euros, the Schürmann Building is considered one of the most expensive buildings in German post-war history.
