In its history, the machine hall with the famous Art Nouveau portal of the Zollern mine in Dortmund has set standards: as an outstanding example of modern industrial architecture, as a house for innovative technology, and later as a pioneering building for industrial monument preservation in Germany.

In 1902/03, Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG had the hall built as the technical heart of its new mine. It is no coincidence that the architecture, with its transept, the altar-like marble switchboard and the colored glazing, is reminiscent of a sacred building. This is exactly how the hall was designed for the first mine whose entire machine park was powered by electricity. "Zollern was a cathedral of electricity, and this was what they wanted to show off with this beauty of steel and glass."

In addition to the architectural value of the facility, the technical equipment is also worth highlighting. In the machine hall, the most important large technical devices such as conveyors, compressors and converters have been largely preserved in their original condition. Of significance in terms of the history of technology is the fact that all the essential machines, including the conveyor machines, were operated electrically for the first time at Zollern. The electricity was originally generated in the company's own generators, which are no longer there.
When designing the technical systems, great importance was also attached to representation. Obvious examples are the magnificent marble control panel with its multitude of original instruments or the large Art Nouveau clock in the machine hall. ..."
