The former Hanseatic city of Elburg is a beautiful place located on the Randmeren. The rectangular street plan dates from the Middle Ages and you will find no less than 250 monuments here, such as ramparts, canals and pieces of city wall.

The picturesque Hanseatic port of Elburg is beautifully situated on the marginal seas.
The place is tourist-friendly but does not seem as crowded as some other towns (which is certainly different in high season).
For me personally, Elburg is the most beautiful place on the Veluwemeer/Drontermeer.

Until 1932 the fishing village Elburg was located directly on the Zuiderzee. The old wooden fishing vessels, the Botter, are still reminiscent of this time. The medieval, checkered center is a real eye-catcher.

Elburg is an old Hanseatic city with a very pretty waterfront town center with many shops and cafes. 😊

In the Middle Ages, Elburg was part of the Hanseatic League: an association of merchants and towns to protect and expand trade together. Just like in the other Hanseatic cities, prosperity flourished in Elburg during this time. And you can still see that. Elburg has many buildings from this period, such as the Gruithuis, where beer herbs were traded, and the Vischpoort, a medieval defense tower.

The most striking building in the old Hanseatic town of Elburg is the "Vischpoort", a venerable city gate from the 15th century that was built near the harbor to protect the residents and now serves as a picturesque entrance to the old town.
The city was built in its current form between 1392 and 1396. A rectangle measuring 370 x 240 meters with straight streets and alleys, as well as a defense system, because the entire old town is surrounded by a moat.
Until 1932, the fishing village of Elburg was located on the Zuiderzee. With the construction of the dike, the creation of the IJsselmeer and the creation of polders (Flevoland), the distance to open waters became significantly greater and fishing became less important.
Today, the lively old town is a tourist magnet.

Anyone who is here in the old fishing town should definitely visit the café / restaurant AAN DE GRACHT, which is special because here people with disabilities and restrictions are trained and employed, absolutely recommendable 👍

Nice, umtriebiger village square, market stalls, cafes and always musicians or other street artists. In the summer months, the Wednesday market takes place (not every week, appoint dates with the VVV), here there are both market stalls and private "flea market seller", street performers, pony rides, carousel and other offers for children. A large parking lot is available outside the fort for free. Here is always worth a visit.
