The viewpoint on the Deusenberg offers a fascinating view of the imposing Hansa coking plant, a monument to the mining industry, and the green plateau of the slag heap. Especially at sunset, a unique atmosphere emerges here, combining rusty history with urban nature. Those who like can extend the tour with a detour to the Emscher River or the Rahmer Wald recreation area.

"In the past, residents in Huckarde and Deusen were severely plagued. The Hansa coking plant, one of the most important central coking plants in the Ruhr region, operated here, adjacent to the mine of the same name. Adjacent to the site is the old Cologne-Minden Railway, an important and noisy main line for passenger and freight traffic. The Emscher, the dirtiest river in all of Europe and a stinking slag heap, lies right next to it. And last but not least, a gigantic mountain of waste and rubble grew here for decades. In short: not so long ago, this patch of earth was one of the dirtiest, most smelly, and ugliest places for miles around.

In the new millennium, the situation is completely different. After its closure in 1992, the coking plant, which emitted masses of dust, dirt, and stench, became a worthwhile industrial monument. The mine has been closed for some time. The slag heap is being reclaimed as part of the Emscher regeneration project is becoming increasingly clear and is increasingly filled with animal and plant life – the stench has disappeared. Cyclists now use the increasingly popular river cycle path along the Emscher. And the garbage dump has also become an amazingly green local recreation area..."
