Wonderful view of the nearby Wartburg - a huge man-made crevice that reveals the view of the nearby Wartburg. According to tradition, decayed animal carcasses were catapulted from here at the time of the Landgraves to the Wartburg in order to contaminate the well water there and to force the castle crew to give up.

The Blidenstatt is part of the "Eisenach Castle" (now an archaeological monument), the remains of a former medieval hilltop castle. The Wartburg was bombarded from here. During the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession (1247–1263), fighting took place from 1260 to January 1262 over the Wartburg and the possession of the city of Eisenach. A Wettin garrison was able to hold out against the besiegers (Brunswick and Hessian troops, reinforced by the Eisenach militia) at the Wartburg. The Eisenach Castle was therefore a siege castle, blocking the southeastern access routes to the city of Eisenach and the Wartburg.
