After 1400, when the city wall was expanded, the Wurzacher gate tower was built. The center of Waldsee was walled in as early as 1283. The extension and the construction of the gate towers fell into the time of the mayor Ulrich Kudrer. Since the Wurzacher suburb burned down several times, the gate tower was called Gluthafentor. In the vernacular it is called the harbor cover. In 1811 the demolition of the city wall and in 1832/33 the rest of the gate towers began. Today every stone would be preserved, but in those days demolition was an act of liberation. The city hungered for light and space, too long it was pressed into the narrowness of the high walls.

Waldsee used to be primarily a farming town with horses, cows, pigs and the associated manure heaps. No wonder the citizens did not hesitate to tear down the wall. The city gates were guarded by reliable, sworn men. There were two goalkeepers at Emberhaven Gate. Not only did they scout to report enemies and fire danger, they also collected the gate toll, pavement money, and freight charges for grain and salt wagons. Anyone who wanted to visit a fair in Waldsee, a horse or grocer's market, had to pay a toll at the town gate.
