The aircraft type was a three-seater Me 110 of a night fighter squadron. The aircraft was on a transfer flight from Hildesheim. In hazy weather, the machine flew over the Ith ridge around 6 p.m. The pilot probably underestimated the height of the mountains when it was dark. The plane first brushed a few treetops on the ridge and then crashed in the direction of Harderode, where it exploded. The crew was killed in the impact. The three crew members are the gunner Sergeant Willy Heizmann, the pilot Lieutenant Dieter Musset and the radio operator Otto Moll.
