Isn't that just a pond !? Oh, look closely! The nature reserve De Luysen - Mariahof is a true paradise for birds, at least 40 hectares in size. You will find three observation huts here, which are always open during the day and give you enough privacy so that you can watch birds. The pond is fed by the Abeek, the lifeline of the nature reserve, and is known for its numerous water mills.

Together with the Stamproyerbroek and the Smeetshof, Sint-Maartensheide-De Luysen forms the border park Kempen-Broek. There are four signposted walks in Sint Maartensheide. The yellow route allows you to discover the ponds and the two bird hides. The green and blue walk shows the small-scale agricultural landscapes of Sint-Maartensheide. Via the red walk you also walk along the Stamprooierbroek, which is managed by Limburgs Landschap. Sint-Maartensheide-De Luysen is one of the most species-rich dragonfly areas in Flanders. The rare large sand spider is only found in one other place in Flanders except here. Special flutterers such as the small fritillary butterfly, the large reflection butterfly and the small kingfisher butterfly also feel at home here.
