The Zandpoort is first mentioned in 1402. The facade is clad with gobertange sand-lime brick; a lot of iron ore from the region has been processed inside. In 1643, the gate was thoroughly restored and renovated, with a flat facade in a sober Renaissance style on the outside.
The last restoration dates from 2007.
Since 1583 there has been a bark mill on the rampart south of the gate. He ground bark and grain. After a fire in 1881 it was replaced by a grain windmill, the Rijkerooymolen. This mill was usually called Walmolen, but also Driesenmolen, after the
last owner, Carolus Driesen. The Driesenmolen was an open standard mill, equipped with two pairs of stones, gray and artificial stones. Such an artificial stone is now set up on the
Molenvest.
The mill was badly damaged by a storm and finally disappeared in October 1940. The mill mountain on the corner of Wasserijstraat remained recognizable until after 1960. Since then, a house has been standing there.
