NZ Messines Ridge Memorial
A Kiwi - Maori site that recalls the VICTORY.
A special place that is very well known on the other side of the world (Australia and New Zealand). Every year ANZAC-DAY is commemorated here with a ceremony (April 25)
JUNE 07, 1917 3.10 am – a deep mine explodes under the German lookout bunkers located on the ridge of Messines. New Zealanders conquer this site in record time and occupy a new frontline. Messines has been recaptured. 700 New Zealanders were killed in this successful action. These are buried in the nearby Messines Ridge British Cemetery. 3000 soldiers were injured in this short action.
This successful offensive by the New Zealanders was praised by the entire senior army.
New Zealanders have earned a reputation for being a top fighting division through this victory.
This site gives you a beautiful panoramic view of the Ypres Salient.
A memorial column commemorates this place of victory.
Today you can still see one of the two German lookout bunkers inside.
NZ memorial is a perfect place to imagine how a ridge was taken by an offensive.
