The Boxtel-Wesel railway line, also called the 'German Line', was opened in 1873 by the North Brabant-German Railway Company (NBDS). The line established a direct short connection between the seaports of Vlissingen, Antwerp, Rotterdam and the German hinterland via ten Dutch and seven German stops.
Between 1888 and 1914, kings, emperors and tsars from England, Prussia and Russia, among others, used this railway to visit each other. Many pilgrims used the German Lijntje to visit the pilgrimage sites of Kevelaer, Boxmeer and Handel. During the Second World War the railway was of great importance to the Germans. The Allies used the connection at the end of the war to invade Germany. The line was closed for passenger transport in 1950 and in 2004 the NS ended freight transport, which still took place between Boxtel and Veghel.
