Without a doubt, the Cathedral is the emblem of the city and its history begins in the 10th century. On top of the old baths and public buildings that the Legio VII had built in the middle of the 2nd century, stood the royal palace of Ordoño II. In 917, after defeating the Arabs in the battle of San Esteban de Gormaz, the king gave up his residence "gratefully to God" so that the first cathedral temple was erected there.

After crossing the Pyrenees along the French Way, pilgrims pass through numerous places of worship, small churches and village chapels. However, there are also large and magnificent cathedrals. The one in León stands out, described in Cordula Rabe's travel guide as "the most outstanding and stylistically pure early Gothic building on Spanish soil", inspired by the cathedral of Reims (France).
