The ghost town is a large area located on top of a hill. From here you have a beautiful view of the sea. A ward for leprosy patients was supposed to be built in Abades, but it was never opened. Construction started in 1944 when leprosy became a serious threat to the people of Tenerife. While World War II was in full swing, Tenerife had almost 200 leprosy deaths.
Therefore, Tenerife devoted itself to the leprosy disease instead of the 2nd World War. Fortunately, the Canary Islands were spared from the World War. Even the name of the clinic was already decided. It should be called “Sanatario de Abona” (translated: Sanctuary of Abona).
The construction of the clinic was well advanced when a cure for leprosy came onto the market. The drug resulted in the clinic being no longer needed and its completion halted before any patient could ever use the clinic.
