At the site where Spetzgart Castle now stands, there was a Staufer castle built around 1200. In 1503, the ruined castle was rebuilt and the palace built. During the Thirty Years' War, it was destroyed again by Swedish troops in 1634 and by French troops in 1643. It was rebuilt in its current form in 1671 under Abbot Konrad Kneer of Obermarchtal. Between 1747 and 1749, the property was given a baroque makeover. Today, the palace belongs to the Salem School and is not open to the public.

Spetzgart Castle was first mentioned in the 13th century. On May 3, 1929 Spetzgart Castle was opened as a part of the Salem Castle School. In 1933, the Spetzgarter Hafen was built by students from the Salem Castle school. The Spetzgart location is connected to the Härlen location by the Spetzgarter Tobel and can be reached in a few minutes on foot. This geographical proximity allows both a flexible teaching concept and a community-strengthening boarding school concept.

When Salem College opened in 2000, the Härlen campus in Überlingen was the last of the three locations to be opened. Not least because of the utilization of the spatial capacities at Spetzgart Castle at the time, the idea arose to set up an international upper school boarding school, which should both retain Salem's tried-and-tested three-tier system and also establish an education appropriate to the age phases in the overall concept of the Salem Castle School.
