At the end of the Second World War, the Augustdorf barracks housed, among others, the SS Panzer Replacement and Training Battalion 1 of the Waffen-SS. During the defense of the barracks on April 2, 1945 (Easter Monday), the Battle of the Dörenschlucht took place, in which 35 men from a convalescent company of the Waffen-SS and an unknown number of American soldiers were killed.
The German soldiers were able to temporarily delay the advance of the 3rd US Panzer Division by shooting down seven Sherman tanks, but were ultimately unsuccessful. The battle ended on April 3, 1945.

On the morning of that day, it was announced that the Americans had penetrated through the Dörenschlucht and split up on this side of the mountains. One part went via Hörste to Oerlinghausen, the other via Pivitsheide towards Hiddesen."
