"The basilica of San Saturno, begun in the 5th century, was built in the Roman city of Carales, today's Cagliari. The remains of the former cross-dome building are among the oldest church ruins in the Mediterranean region and were the model for the (preserved) Byzantine churches in Sardinia.

The still-preserved east wing of the former central building stands on Piazza San Cosima in Cagliari's Villanova district. The church was not completed until the end of the 10th century, as construction was interrupted around 455 AD by the conquest of the Vandals. The Spaniards destroyed the crumbling structure in the 17th century by removing most of the stones for the new construction of the cathedral. An Allied bomb hit took care of the rest in 1943. "

If you wander through the historic streets of Cagliari, you will come across a silent witness to our time: the Basilica of San Saturnino. Its foundations, laid in Roman Carales - today's Cagliari - in the 5th century, record stories that span centuries and that you will certainly be impressed by.

Take a moment to pause in Piazza San Cosima in the Villanova district. The still preserved east wing of the former impressive central building towers up here. A look at these ruins gives you an idea of what an architectural masterpiece the basilica once was. With its unique cross-dome construction, it is one of the oldest church ruins in the Mediterranean and inspired many subsequent Byzantine buildings in Sardinia.

The history of the basilica is characterized by ups and downs. After construction began in the 5th century, it was abruptly interrupted by the Vandal conquest around 455 AD. It would take until the end of the 10th century before the church was finally completed. But the ravages of time and human activity left their mark: in the 17th century, Spaniards demolished the already crumbling walls stone by stone in order to rebuild the cathedral. And during the Second World War, an Allied bomb hit destroyed what was left of the once magnificent church.
