The Handstein pit lies on the western parts of the mining area Eisernehand east of Oberscheld. In the late 19th century, it was one of the most productive pits in the area for years, even allowing it to compete with the Königszug mine. It first belonged to the company Franksche Eisenwerke, before it passed in 1926 by purchase to the company J. C. Green.
The mining of the ironstone camp was carried out from the outset initially in the open pit, including through the Handsteinstollen, the 30 m depth introducing Amalienstollen and the other 48 m lower located Georgstollen. The civil engineering went underneath through a blind shaft of the Georgstollensohle; At 30 m, 55 m, 95 m and 175 m civil engineering floors were used.
