    Café Westend, Vienna “Traditional Viennese Coffee House”
    Café Westend is a historic coffee house in Vienna that originally opened in 1875. It is located in the 7th district of Vienna, at Mariahilfer Straße 128.
    During World War I, the café served as a meeting place for officers and diplomats. It was also a popular place for artists and intellectuals who met regularly to mingle and exchange ideas.
    Emperor Franz Joseph I is said to have actually visited Café Westend regularly. It is reported that the emperor often preferred a table in the corner of the room where he could drink his coffee and read the newspaper in peace.
    During World War II, the café was damaged and had to be closed. However, after the war, it reopened and is now one of the most famous coffee houses in Vienna. It is known for its historic ambience and classic Viennese coffee house atmosphere and is popular with locals and tourists alike.

      Café Westend, Vienna (History)
      The Café Westend is a classic Viennese coffee house in the 7th district of Vienna, Neubau, on the corner of Neubaugürtel and Mariahilfer Strasse 128.
      The coffee house is located in the Zachariashof, a large corner tenement house built in 1899 by the architect Robert Prihuda. The exact opening date was, according to newspaper reports at the time, December 16, 1899. (According to other sources, however, the Café Westend was opened in 1895 (Cafejournal, 2004) or 1896 (Kurier 2013).) On April 30, 1919, a Jos. F. Postl and a Rudolf Steigberger "brought a polite notice to a P.T. audience that we are taking over the well-known Café Westend from May 1, 1919." It remained in the possession of the Postl family for 80 years until it was taken over by Edmund and Melitta Kroyer in 1999,[3] who continued to run it in the legal form of Kroyer GmbH[6] until it was taken over by Hans and Claudia Kroyer.
      The interior design with its high, stucco-decorated ceilings is still largely intact, although the chandeliers date from the 1950s. Due to its proximity to the Westbahnhof, the coffee house has always particularly attracted travelers and commuters. According to the new operators, however, the café was in a "sleeping beauty" state until it was taken over in 1999 and guests stayed away. After completely replacing the staff (with the exception of a long-serving waiter) and carefully preserving and restoring the old building, "young people again and not just the typical students" would now visit the place. On September 1, 2018, the coffee house was taken over again and gently renovated.

        Café Westend is different for several reasons. Due to its location between Westbahnhof and the Mariahilfer Straße shopping street, between the suburbs and the city centre, the Westend attracted a more diverse clientele than almost any other Viennese coffee house. Now it has to close after more than 120 years due to high costs and too few guests. The city would lose more than just another coffee house.
