Old water pumping windmill. A good indication of the age (of the style) of a windmill is to check whether it is only the cap of the windmill that rotates together with the sails or is the whole body that rotates.

If the whole body rotates the style is from the 15th to 16th century, if it is only the cap that rotates (and the body is usually made of brick) than it is from the 17th century or after

On June 26, 1492, "those of Hoechmade ... consented to a kerckgebot to set up a watermill". The then Lord of Hoogmade, Geryt van Poelgeest, will undoubtedly have played a role in this.

In 1692 the Hoge Heerlijkheid Hoogmade was bought by Cornelis Sprong, to whose heirs the polder still belonged undivided in 1990, namely to the Stichting de Erven Cornelis Sprongh van Hoogmade. It is therefore a private polder, approximately 172 hectares in size.

In 1795 the paddle wheel was replaced and a new rod was also placed. In 1862 a rod was renewed again, as in 1884, when it was bought for NLG 150,= from the Van Hoeken brothers in Leiden. In 1863 J. Schattenkerk from Alphen aan den Rijn supplied a water ash for ƒ 73.=.

The mill of the Hoogmadesche Polder was demolished in 1897 due to its age and poor condition, and under the direction of mill maker H.J. Verbij replaced by the still existing successor.
