    The Rendsburg transporter ferry hangs on the railway bridge over the Kiel Canal in Rendsburg. It has spanned the Kiel Canal at kilometer 63 since 1913 and thus connects the city of Rendsburg in the north with the villages to the south of the canal. The Rendsburg transporter ferry was built together with the railway high bridge by Friedrich Voss.
    This construction is unique in the world. A trolley is mounted under the railway bridge and runs back and forth on rails attached to the outside of the bridge carriageway. The ferry is suspended from it, driven by 4 electric motors and fastened with 12 steel cables.
    It was opened to traffic on December 2, 1913 and has been commuting regularly from bank to bank ever since. It can carry four cars and 100 people. The ferryman in his cabin above the lane is solely responsible for the safe crossing. The ferry basket has actually only undergone one major change since it was put into operation. In 1955 the pedestrian walkways were added to the side. The security technology, however, is continuously adapted to the latest standards. The ferry has a radar device and also an emergency drive and much more. When the NOK was completed, the government of the time determined that all canal crossings should be free of charge for citizens. It is still like that today.
    From 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., the transporter bridge floats every quarter of an hour from one bank to the other of the artificial waterway. It can cross four cars and 60 pedestrians in less than 2 minutes the 135 meters across the canal.

            After the total loss accident in 2016, a completely new example of the transporter bridge has been hanging in Rendsburg since November 2021. The new ferry cost 13 million euros. The ferry is an important means of transport in the region. Passenger operations are scheduled to start at the end of February 2022.

              The transporter bridge over the Kiel Canal is impressive. After a collision with a ship, it was not put back into operation until 2022. You should definitely take the crossing once if you are in the area. Like all ferries across the Kiel Canal, the trip is free.

                It's already hanging... The new transporter bridge is scheduled to go into operation in November 2021, and then you'll be able to cross the canal again.

                As of March 4, 2022: Hooray, it's running/floating again. ;)

                As of 2025: There are always problems with the ferry... sometimes it runs, sometimes it doesn't.

                        The transporter bridge brings the two banks of the Kiel Canal together in a special way. This unique vehicle celebrates its 100th birthday in 2013. It is one of the last eight systems of a similar type in the world. The high railway bridge with the transporter bridge is a prime example of the art of engineering and is still an extraordinary landmark of the region today.

                        On January 8th, 2016, the transporter bridge collided with a seagoing vessel. The transporter bridge was damaged beyond repair. This was followed by the planning and construction of a new transporter bridge based on the original model, equipped with the latest technology.

                        After almost three years of construction, the new transporter bridge was put back into operation on March 4, 2022 at its place under the Rendsburg High Bridge.
                        It is one of the last eight (of originally 20) surviving buildings of this type in the world.
                        Visually, the new building corresponds to the old transporter bridge.
                        But there are a number of innovations and improvements to the unique building.
                        At the same time as the ferry was being rebuilt, the transporter bridge rails, including the rail supports on the high bridge, were also renewed.

                          The Restaurant Brückenterassen is located right next to the transport bridge. From there you can watch the transport bridge "floating" under the Rendsburg railway bridge while enjoying a coffee or a cool drink. On the other side of the street at the port area is a large mobile home parking space, right on the canal bank.
