The place is now known mainly for the monastery Abbazia dei Santi Salvatore e Cirino, which was built in 1001 with adjoining Hospital of Ava Lambardi di Staggia and was extended to 1062. The then belonging to the Diocese of Volterra church was consecrated in 1173 and at the end of the 14th century, the buildings were provided with a defensive wall ring. The baptismal font dates from the year 1419. The large Campanile probably comes from an earlier defense tower. Until 1445, the abbey was inhabited by the Benedictines, who left the monastery due to the frequent military conflicts between Siena and Florence. From 1446 the abbey was then subordinated to the monastery Monastero di Sant'Eugenio in Costafabbri (now part of Siena), about 2 km kilometers southwest of Siena. Today the church belongs to the archdiocese of Siena-Colle Val d'Elsa-Montalcino.

The Abbazia dei Santi Salvatore e Cirino, also known as Badia a Isola, is a former Cistercian monastery located in Abbadia a Isola, west of the village of Monteriggioni, in the province of Siena in the Italian region of Tuscany. The monastery was founded in 1001 by Ava, a noblewoman of the Lambardi di Staggia family. The monastery was located on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route and served as a hospice or inn for travelers on their way to Rome. The abbey church is a three-aisled basilica, covered by a roof with a crypt and ending with a triapsidal tribune. The monastery complex now includes an inn and a restaurant.
