    Dinant is located in the Haute-Meuse valley, where the river cuts deeply into the western Condroz plateau. Squeezed between rock and water, the city has little room to expand; It is therefore all in length that the city developed, first in distinct nuclei, from the Roman period, then in a continuous ribbon oriented from north to south. In the course of the nineteenth century, the former Île des Batteurs, to the south of the city, was "attached" to the mainland by abandoning and filling in the arm of the Meuse which separated it from the city.
