It took until the 100th anniversary for the first democracy on German soil to receive its own memorial site in Weimar, the place where it was founded. The Weimar Republic Association e.V. is committed to researching the history and experiences of the Weimar Republic and making them useful for our democracy today. The permanent exhibition in the skylight hall of the former art gallery invites you to learn more about the Weimar Republic - from its revolutionary beginnings to its political establishment and consolidation, people's everyday lives and the new opportunities of the "Golden Twenties" to the crises and challenges that the young democracy faced. The site of today's house of the Weimar Republic was still a Franciscan monastery in the Middle Ages. After the Reformation the buildings continued to be used. After the demolition at the beginning of the 19th century, the coach house for the Grand Ducal Saxony-Weimar carriage "fleet" was built based on designs by Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray. This was followed by use as scenery storage for the neighboring theater. After considerable destruction in the Second World War, renovations and expansions were carried out to create an art gallery. From 1994 to 2018, this was the temporary site of the Bauhaus Museum. Following this, the House of the Weimar Republic was set up here, opposite the German National Theater, where Germany's first democratic constitution was adopted in 1919.
