As a memorial to the many dead, such memorials or war memorials are very important to this day. "Now you, lord, let your servant part in peace, as you said ..." it says in the so-called "hymn of praise of Simeon" (Luke Gospel chapter 2, verse 29). The people who are commemorated here, however, are not divorced in peace, but have become victims of war and tyranny.
Many places that one encounters along the way bear witness to the horrors of war and tyranny, which are still important today. They all have two main functions:
-1- Remember the victims and remember them
-2- Admonish the keeping of the peace

The Heldenhain memorial, dedicated in November 1925, stands at the southern end of Georg-Herwegh-Strasse. It is located in the oak grove laid out in 1808, which was named after Hindenburg in 1917. In 1921, the city administration decided to erect a memorial in honor of the citizens of Eberswalde who died in World War I and commissioned the Berlin sculptor Hans Dammann (1867-1942) with the design. The memorial placed on a slightly elevated forest clearing, to which a 150 m long path leads from the road, consists of a round building open at the top on eight pillars. They carry an entablature with two commemorative inscriptions. In the middle rises a pedestal decorated with boar heads and garlands with a sacrificial bowl. On the inside of the pillars were 24 bronze plaques with the names of 826 people who fell victim to the "metal donation" in 1942. Gradually neglected after 1945, the facility was renovated from 2008 to 2013 on the initiative of the local history association. Source: brandenburg.museum-digital.de/object/5820
