This church in Schongau was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) have the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

"The Basilica of St. Michael in Altenstadt was built between 1180 and 1220 as a parish church based on the model of some churches in northern Italy. The late Romanesque tuff stone building has been almost completely preserved or restored in its original design. Larger conversions and thus the overprinting of other epochs, such as in the Pfaffenwinkel happened in many places during the baroque period, did not happen."

But why was this magnificent church not baroque?
The answer is simple: there was no more money!
In the High Middle Ages, Altenstadt was a trading center on the Roman road that led from Verona to Augsburg.
Later, the focus shifted to Schongau because the Lech became more important as a traffic artery.
We are therefore lucky to be able to admire an authentic Romanesque basilica with 32 m high twin towers and huge tufa blocks.
A medieval giant crucifix dominates the interior.
