Unter, Mittel and Obersee Ville is a chain of three lakes, separated only by narrow dams, in the large forest-lake landscape of the Ville. They belong to the subsequent landscape of the early lignite mining from the end of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century, which still characterizes the entire area today. The surrounding deciduous and mixed deciduous forests, used for forestry, stand on recultivated land, recognizable by the many types of wood, including many locals, but also pine, locust and red oak in a few age groups. The lakes represent residual holes that have been filled with water when the groundwater rises again and are largely left to develop further. Since forest recultivation in 1925, they have been surrounded by forest, which reduces the nutrient input from the outside, which greatly benefits biodiversity.

Significant throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, but largely hidden from the visitor, are the lawns made of chandelier algae (so-called Characeae lawns), which of the three mesotrophic bodies of water are mainly contained in the Untersee. It is easier to see the variety of bank and water plants with large belts of reeds and extensive floating leaves of spawning herbs, pond and water lilies. They attract a large number of now rare dragonflies, which leads to the outstanding biodiversity of up to 32 species.
