Greyfriars Bobby is a terrier who became known for guarding the grave of his owner for some 14 years, until he himself died in 1872.

A fountain with a life-sized statue was created as a monument in 1872, with an additional monument marking the 150th anniversary of the dog's death being installed in Greyfriars Kirk in 2021.

Bobby belonged to the policeman John Gray and is said to have spent the remaining 14 years of his own life after his death in 1858 at Gray's grave in the churchyard of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh's Old Town. He only left his seat for meals, which were served to him in the nearby “Coffee House”. According to contemporary reports, onlookers regularly gathered in front of the cemetery at lunchtime to watch the dog on his daily walk to the coffee house, where...
