The abandoned Montraker quarry, located on the northwestern peninsula of the historic center, is certainly the most important limestone deposit in the Vrsar area, both in terms of size and historical significance.

The beginning of the mining activity can be placed in the prehistoric era. In Roman times the buildings around the port of Vrsar (horreum, rustic villa on the site of the current church of Santa Maria) were built with this stone, as was the port itself. The exploitation of the quarry continued from Venetian rule (1778-1797), until the times of the former Yugoslavia, after 1945. The extraction technique of Montraker stone remained unchanged for centuries, and only changed with the use of dynamite.

Montraker stone was used, around 1940, for the construction of the long railway bridge that connects Venice to the mainland. It is a 3,601 meter bridge, with 234 arches and 8 meter openings. To transport the stones from Montraker, 46 barges and 14 ships were continuously used. This realization represented the most important and most demanding moment of the quarry's activity.
