The Luiseninsel in the Tiergarten was artificially reclaimed and landscaped in 1809. The Berliners wanted to erect a monument to Queen Luise, who liked to walk in the garden here.

It was not until 1880 that the original marble stele was replaced by the marble statue that still stands today.

The Luiseninsel is an artificially heaped up island in the southern part of the large animal garden in Berlin. In the course of the return of the royal couple from the East Prussian exile some citizens of Berlin decided to set a memorial to their beloved queen. Since she liked to walk in this area of the Tiergarten, it was obvious to choose a suitable place. Christmas 1809, a stele was dedicated with attached marble shell at the southern end of the small island. At about the same time, the environment was adapted horticultural. Since then the island is called Luiseninsel.
