At the square next to the estuary, the Portuguese occupiers built a pelourinho (pillory). After the independence of Cabo Verdes, he was a symbol of the hated colonial era and partially destroyed. Restored in the meantime, Cape Verdeans today accept Pelourinho as part of their story.

The white marble column stands in the main town of Cidade Velha in the south of Santiago on Cape Verde. The column is one of the oldest monuments in Cape Verde. There are various details about the year it was created (1512/1520). It was restored at the end of the 1960s.
