    Melk Abbey, officially Melk Abbey (Latin Abbatia SS. App. Petri et Pauli apud Melk), is a Benedictine abbey in the state of Lower Austria in the town of Melk on the right bank of the Danube. Today's baroque building was built by Jakob Prandtauer between 1702 and 1746. As a landmark of the Wachau, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been described as “the most emblematic and dominant Baroque building.”[1] It also houses the Melk Stiftsgymnasium, the oldest still existing school in Austria. The abbot of the monastery is Georg Wilfinger (Wikipedia).

        In addition to visiting the monastery, you should definitely take the time to explore the old town. In the pedestrian zone (but where you can ride a bike) you will find some nice bars with beautiful sidewalk cafés.

            Melk Abbey is worth a visit, a guided tour is recommended. The possibility to park the bikes is good. The place is understandably very touristy.

              A visit to Melk Abbey is of course a must on every bike tour through this beautiful place. There is a large parking space for bicycles right at the main entrance. I paid 13 euros to enter. With this ticket I could visit everything, including the state rooms and exhibitions. You can also take part in a guided tour, which I didn't use. Of course, you get a lot of valuable additional information. Unfortunately I didn't manage to see the monastery garden in peace on my tour either. My colleagues, we were traveling as a team, but we raved about the system. The opening times are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (as of 2023). With the experiences and impressions I was able to collect there, it was a clear highlight of a visit to Melk.
