The gate commemorates one of the most important battles of the Middle Ages. It's a David vs. Goliath story and one about longing for freedom. The ill-equipped Flemings fought against the French armed to the teeth. infantry; Weavers and other artisans opposed knights trained to kill.

Everything looked like the Flemish would lose. But as is well known, pride comes before a fall and the French underestimate the swampy terrain and above all the desperation with which the Flemish fought for their freedom. It happened as it usually only happens in Hollywood films: the Flemings won.

They proudly exhibited the captured spurs of the dead opponents in the Church of Our Lady - hence the name of the fight: The Battle of the Golden Spurs.

The triumphal arch was built on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of the Golden Spurs and provides access to the Groeninge Park, where the Groeningeveld was located during the Middle Ages.
The gilded Groeninge Monument is also located in this Groeninge Park.
The Groeninge Gate was built in 1908 in Ardennes stone and bears the inscription 1302 – Groeningheveld.
