The birthplace of Mata Hari (Margaretha Zelle) is located at Kelders 33. Mata Hari lived with her family above her father's hat shop. Inside the house, two posters with photo collages commemorate the former residents. The Zelle family had close ties to this place as Margaretha's father was also born there. The stately hotel “de Nieuwe Doelen” used to stand in front of the house where the Maxx store is now located. Margaretha often played on the square in front of the hotel.

Near the bridge you will find the statue of Mata Hari, designed and made in 1976 by the artist Suus Boschma-Berkhout, on the occasion of Mata Hari's 100th birthday. It was unveiled on March 13th, the day of its first performance in Paris under the name Mata Hari. Protests against the statue of this sinful woman also took place on the day of its unveiling.
