The Stiefel Mill had been owned by the Stiefel family since 1836.
It was named after the mill owner, Karl Ernst Stiefel (born October 2, 1861 – May 11, 1932).

His name on the front of the building still commemorates this today. With his tireless work in building and expanding the roller mill, he contributed significantly to the economic development of the community of Erfenschlag.

By 1960, all other members of the mill family had emigrated to the West or fled, having been deprived of any economic basis.

After 1990, almost all members of the mill family returned to Erfenschlag. Old contacts had even survived the division of Germany.
